You can have a beautifully translated French storefront, localized product descriptions, and Quebec-optimized SEO — and still lose the sale at checkout. The checkout is where purchase intent is highest and where friction is most costly. For French-speaking customers, an English-only checkout is a significant trust barrier. Studies consistently show that shoppers are far more likely to complete a purchase when the entire experience — including checkout — is in their language.
Here's how to localize your Shopify checkout for Quebec and France customers.
The foundation of a localized Shopify checkout is having French published as a language in your Shopify Markets settings. When a customer arrives at your store via the /fr-ca or /fr-fr URL, Shopify will automatically serve the checkout in French — but only if French is correctly configured and all checkout strings have been translated.
Go to Settings → Markets → your French market → Languages, and confirm that French is published, not just added.
Shopify's checkout has a set of translatable strings — button labels, form field placeholders, error messages, shipping option labels, and order summary copy. These need to be translated via the Translate & Adapt app or a compatible translation app.
Pay particular attention to: the "Complete order" and "Continue to payment" buttons, shipping method names and descriptions, error messages (these are often overlooked and left in English), and any custom checkout content you've added via Shopify's checkout editor.
Shopify's transactional emails — order confirmation, shipping notification, delivery confirmation — are part of the checkout experience. For Quebec customers, these should arrive in French. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Notifications and translate each email template for your French market.
This is a detail many brands miss, and it matters. Receiving an English order confirmation after shopping in French creates a jarring, disconnected experience that undermines trust in your brand.
Shipping method names ("Standard Shipping," "Express Delivery") and payment labels need to be translated. These appear prominently in the checkout flow and are often left in English even when the rest of the checkout is translated. Make sure every string a customer sees between cart and order confirmation is in French.
Trust signals in the checkout — security badges, money-back guarantee text, return policy summaries — should also be in French. If you've added any custom content to your checkout via Shopify's checkout editor, audit it to ensure nothing is displaying in English for French-market customers.
Quebec's Bill 96 strengthens requirements for French-language service in Quebec. While Content Mosaic is not a lawyer and this is not legal advice, ensuring your checkout is fully available in French is an important step toward compliance. Consult qualified legal counsel for specific guidance.
